Folklore collection "Once upon a time - manners and worldview of the Bulgarians"

"Once upon a time - manners and worldview of the Bulgarians"

It is a compendium, an encyclopedia that can be read all the time and not necessarily all of it. The old traditions of every nation are valuable. To better understand the present and make our way to the future, we need to know our past well. In order for humanity to exist and live in peace and harmony, order is needed. In the old Bulgarian traditions, we find that cosmic order, that hierarchy that has helped us survive over the centuries.

There are more than one or two books on the market that are dedicated to Bulgarian folklore, traditions and customs and everything related to them. This collection is distinguished by the fact that it covers, if not all, at least a large part of our folklore. And at the same time it rotates twice a period of time. Once as the cycle of human life: the courtship of the young, the wedding, the birth of a child, the building of a home and of course death; and a second time as one calendar year with all the feasts and rites.

The book begins with a description of folklore areas and their peculiarities as to dance, music, costumes. The second part is dedicated to folk instruments: where they are distributed, what they are made of and how the sound is extracted. Then we move on to the suits and the embroidery. Clothing was an important part of Bulgarian life. In the past, it was used as a form of identity document. By his distinguishing marks it was understood from which area a given person came, from which family he was, whether he was a family member or not, his material condition. The symbolism of embroidery and decoration was also not created without meaning. They follow rites, holidays and customs, as I decided to include and the national ones, which are an important part of our historical past and are related to our lifestyle and culture. I ended up making a small one a list of some forgotten words from our language, which are not used today, but the objects they name were an essential part of the daily life of the old Bulgarians.
